Style of Style

Most of the music was composed during the covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021. I needed musicians who could take the ideas to another level. It all came together with Joonatan Rautio, the saxophone artist and bandleader extraordinaire. He helped in getting the Bunch together.

About the compositions

  • About To Leave – I was standing by the door going out. This melody came into my head and did not vanish. Had to turn back and write it down.
  • Style Of Style and Lyric – Both of these were found when I moved my fingers on the piano. Lyrical Creme de la Creme.
  • Winter Fun – I broke the rules by a dominant 7th chord with the added 4th. My winter fun is slalom skiing in the Alps.
  • September Seventh – means September 7th, 2020.
  • Northern Shoveller – I took a photograph of this beautiful duck. Needed a bossa of its own. Note the second take, which is a bit different.
  • Calamity – Listen what happens after our pianist starts his impeccable solo and gradually evolves the idea into calamitous heights.
  • Irrelevant – I’m not certain that the title reflects the music as it is relevant for me, I guess. Am I alive?
  • Undoubtedly Irrelevant – This is for solo piano. No improvisations. – I thought this to be a perfect way to wrap up this album.

About the composer

It’s not a huge mystery why I compose music – it’s just, that something in my head tells me
I must do it.

About the recording

Me and Esko Soinne had similar views on how to make this recording. He knew immediately what I am trying to say with the black dots. All percussion tracks, some solos, acoustic guitars and the piano piece were recorded separately.

To Anni, my one and only love

All CD album photographs, texts compositions and arrangements by Veli-Matti Kimanen. He uses a Henneken jazz guitar and Rikstone amp, both handmade in Finland.
